According to Billboard.com, Nickelback is the 7th best artist of the decade, and the number one, and only, rock band in the top ten.

I know this may come as shocking news to some people out there. Nickelback has repeatedly been called “the worst band of all time” in many Internet forums and has never been a favorite of music critics and other media outlets. At least they have been spared the ubiquitous honor awarded to Creed, by google term suggestions. (Creed is number 19 on the billboard chart, by the way.)

Despite the mediocrity of every record they’ve released, in a twist of logic and merit-based success, Nickelback sold 30 million records in the oughts. Yet they are, and will always be, that generic mind-numbing rock band that makes non-mainstream music lovers cringe at the horse-muttering of lead singer Kroeger. As seriouslyguys.com noticed back in August, the name Nickelback so ubiquitously inspires disinterest that Harmonix (Creator of Rockband) CEO in a NYtimes article said, “The Rock Band Network is so potentially consequential that Harmonix went to great lengths to keep its development a secret, including giving it the unofficial in-house code name Rock Band: Nickelback, on the theory that the name of the quintessentially generic modern rock group would be enough to deflect all curiosity.”

This just goes to show that the world may hear the music of Nickelback, but their success is still mocked by so many. Perhaps the only upside are the crisp c-notes stacked in the band’s coffers, maybe not such a bad deal.
