2009 International Aperture Awards-Gold

Another entry into the 2009 International Aperture Awards. This image finished 21st in the Landscape category. The top 50 are shown here

I’m not sure how many entries there were this year, but last year there were over 70,000 entries total from around the world. The top 5 entries from each category competed for the Grand Prize. I would like to have placed in the top 5 for Landscape, but I’m very happy with 21st of thousands! There were only two other images in the top 50 landscape category from the US, neither of which I was able to find on Flickr.

Street Triptych

Street Triptych

I shot these three images within a minute of each other at one intersection. A very interesting cross section of humanity looking to make things work in the world. Each one has a story to tell but combined it creates an Epic.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Before the jury left the courtroom Tuesday, two images of Rachel Hoffman were put on a big screen. <p/> In the first, the 23-year-old Clearwater native showed an easy smile that revealed her effervescent, carefree spirit. In the second, her body lay askew, arms and legs jumbled, covered by her beloved Grateful Dead sweat shirt, at the bottom of a ditch along a rural road.

Orange Chair

I have been away for a rather long time now while I focus all of my attention on raising my beautiful daughter.

We are constantly traveling and I love spending every minute of my day with her. Consequently, photography is somewhat on the back burner, particularly since I lack the time to properly process my images.

Nonetheless, we are currently in South Beach, Miami and are about to head back to Costa Rica for a few weeks. Since my wife went shopping today and took the baby with her, I had some time to shoot.

Here’s a shot of South Pointe Park.

I’m doing more and more portrait work using natural light and a reflector. Its rewarding to use so little equipment to produce images parents love. This little girl really made me laugh during the shoot. I had to bribe her with toys though, otherwise she would have taken my camera.
