A Visit to Haulover Marina
If you’re ever bored on a weekend and looking for a nice place to see kites, boats, birds, fish, and party people all in one location, Haulover Marina and its accompanying beach will fit the bill.
Located between Sunny Isles and Bal Harbour, just off Collins Ave, is the Haulover Marina and Haulover Beach. But first, you may want to know a little history about the area, and the unusual name.
From Wikipedia “The name Baker’s Haulover is presumed to derive from a man named Baker who hauled small boats over the isthmus between ocean and bay. The name appeared on a map as early as 1823.”
That isthmus is now known with the generic “government cut” nomenclature. Realise that most of the inlets from the ocean in South Florida are labeled “Government Cut”, so in your conversations you’ll want to include “… at Haulover”.
For sport fishing, you can charter a boat at the marina, hosted by “Kelley Fishing Fleet”, where there is a choice of large and small boats to choose from.
Haulover’s amenities include not just the marina, but a park, long known for kite enthusiasts.
( Haulover Beach has a huge reputation for nude sunbathing, and is the only Miami-Dade park where it is allowed, legally, although topless sunbathing is legal everywhere in Miami-Dade county. We’ll save the beach at Haulover for another article )

From Wikipedia:"There is a State of Florida Historical Landmark Marker (over 50 years old) at the original Lighthouse Dock site dedicated on February 21, 2004, to the first charter-boat captains at the 1926-1951 dock. It is the only marker in the State of Florida for a fishing dock. There is still a charter-boat fishing fleet there."
