Deco Bikes – New Rental Bikes for Miami Beach - May 26th, 2011

There’s a really cool service in Miami Beach (aka South Beach) – new rental bikes called “Deco Bikes”! Launched in March of 2011 the service is exclusive to Miami Beach and run by a private company in partnership with the City of Miami Beach.
You can literally rent a bicycle by the hour or day now in Miami Beach from the jetty (South Pointe) all the way up to 5300 Collins. Their maps at the rental locations show locations further north and throughout areas west of Collins but not to be believed as of late there are no bikes north of 4400. The service is all automated and completely goof proof. You rent the bike, unplugging it from the kiosk, ride and return to any other kiosk, being sure to plug it into the kiosk (listen for the beep). A 1 hour ride is $5.35! “Yeah but how do they keep people from stealing them?” The bike is attached to your atm-debit card or credit card, and if that isn’t enough they have RFID chips in them to track you. Bring your own bike lock if you plan on parking or leaving it unattended while you shop or eat …
There is a discount for Miami Beach residents that makes it a great deal for $14/day … Oh – and a smart tip – sit on and thouroughly check out your bike before you rent it – make sure the seat adjusts properly, that the brakes are working, air in the tires and that someone hasn’t messed up the bike. And one last thing, you gotta love the regulation bell – it’s very reminiscent of a child’s bike and adds a nostalgic touch … make sure you use your bell when passing or attempting to pass pedestrians.
